SHOULD DR KWAME NKRUMAH'S BIRTHDAY BE DECLARED A NATIONAL HOLIDAY IN GHANA? POST YOUR RESPONES
Good article, I have always asked myself why nkrumah's birthday is not a national holiday, he was the first president of the republic of Ghana and he built all the foundations for Ghana to become what it has become today, the government of ghana must wake up and honor Dr kwame nkrumah, what has surprised me all this years is that instead of the government to Declare his birthday a national holiday they name the circle round-about after our first president and named the only international airport in Ghan after Kotoka? what has kotoka done for Ghana? nothing is the answer, go round in Ghana today and tell me one single development that Kotoka founded, we Ghanaians are funny, the only honor we honored nkrumah was we built a statue of him and not a holiday, example a foreigner comes to ghana, it is hardly to hear this people ask who is this, but if his birthday is declared a national holiday they will see shops closed and see our independence square parked and filled with honor, then they will ask what is going on and then we can tell them we are honoring our first president.

Nyao, I agree with you, let me tell you I have been living in New York for 17 years now and on Presidents day we dont go to work, and every car dealer in america gives discount to people to buy cars on presidents day, as for dr. kwame nkrumah ghana havent done enough to honor him, even other african countries celebrate dr. kwame nkrumah more than we ghanaians do

You live in NewYork for the past 17 yrs so i guess i have to remind u incase u have forgotten. The average Ghanaian lives on $600 a YEAR.The average U.S citizen lives on at least $ 12000 a year.Is there any bases for comparism btn these two countries?
U must understand Ghana needs to work hard to get to a middle income status. The economic cost alone on that holiday may be too much to bear by the country.
Other forms of honouring him may be undertaken if we think the existing ones (K.N.U.S.T, Nkrumah circle, etc) are not enough.
GOD BLESS OUR HOMELAND, GHANA

I call on ghanaians to ask themselfs a very simple question, who is the father of Ghana? i believe it is Dr. kwame Nkrumah, this question must be broght to the attention of government, every country have their founding fathers and our founding father in ghana is Dr. kwame nkrumah, yes his birthday should be declared a national holiday

nkrumah has done ghana nothing but misuse the little money that the colonial left for ghana, he used all the money on other countries that are today better than ghana, he is not a hero

Kwame Nkrumah had the worse human rights voilations in history.
He decalred himself president for life, arrested all his political opponents.
He neglected the internal affairs of ghana and was rather using our resourses to finance meccenaries to topple gov'ts that were not in support of his "africa must unite" concept.
He gave Guinea 10 million dollars just to get them to support his idea of africa must unite.
This money has not been recovered till today.
10 million dollars could have built about 3 universities in those days cos that money was an equivalent of 10 billion dollars in todays rate.
Kwame Nkrumah is the reason ghana is suffering today.
Instead of following the capitalist Idealogy of free market,he chose to rather implement the communist Idealogy of state own enterprise.
Nkrumah was a tyrant and ghana does not need his legacy.
No wonder political parties that campaign on Nkruamh's idealogy never wins elections.

It is all politics, if the ghana government thinks nkrumah's birthday be declared holiday cus he had a bad human right abuse records, then why name the accra circle runabout after him,I smell something, thegovernment must take into account that this same Dr nkrumah was the main reason why ghana had independence, and the greatest gift that was ever giving to ghana was independence, so respect the great kwame nkrumah and let us all celebrate his birthday as a national holiday,

What has ghana achieved from the so-called independence after 50 yrs?
Corruption from greedy leaders, started with Nkrumah, then Acheampong,Afrifa, kotoka, kuffuor etc.
Even an airport was named after a useless military leader like kotoka.
Are we better off after the british left?or we are worse off.
What 50 yrs are we celebrating?
Enough of Nkrumah nonsense.

I advocate for General Afrifa. He is the real officer and gentleman of the millenium. He trained at Sandhurst Military Academy in England. He witnessed the atrocities and brutal dictatorship of Dr.Nkrumah towards the end. He decided that enough was enough and with the assistance of the CIA was able to overthrown Nkrumah's government and reduce it to the political dustbin that it belongs. The CPP was banned for a period of time and rightfully so. I shall return. prezafrifa.2008@yahoo.com

No matter who he was, declaring his birthday a holiday absolutely makes no sense.Think about the economy. We are still thriving to gain feet in the economic world with our minimum salary as low as $60(a month). What Ghana has to think about is the POSSIBLE ways and means the average citizen can afford accommodation and at least a three square meal, rather than deliberating on issues completely IRRELEVANT(as this). Have u thought of the economic cost of these holidays?
People comment;..."on Presidents day we dont go to work, in the U.S."Come on, the U.S has atleast all it has to do such things.............
Comparing Ghana to the U.S makes NO SENSE.
Let us think about other ways to honour our first president if we think the existing ones (K.N.U.S.T, Nkrumah circle, etc) are not enough.
GOD BLESS OUR HOMELAND, GHANA

Am not interested in personality court. But a national that doesn't recognize its citizen is a national not worth cherishing . So Nkrumah spend the money colonials left extravagantly? Colonials stayed in Gold Coast - Ghana from 1515 to 1957. Nkrumah from 1957 to 1966. Compare each legacy. Nkrumah's legacy. 1- Free education from primary to university level. 2- State enterprise provided for the masses; private enterprise contributed to the state development. 3- Most African & African American attended school in Ghana to liberate their countries. 4- industry were established to harness our raw materials - gold smelter in Tarkwa, Bamboo factories, State transport Corp- STC. AS FOR HUMAN RIGHT ABUSE: How is Americas freedom of speech now since 9/11 or Britain terrorist law drawn post 7/7. Arrested without trial. Imprisonment while investigation pends. Which Nkrumah's life was, due to the constant Bombing he had to endure I guess one can say Tony Blair, Gordon Brown or George Bush are Dictators, Tyrants, violators of Human rights.
Because of Nkrumah most African believe in Africa through Ghana. Youth of Ghana and Africa, Party politics and personalities are never going to get us anywhere. NO GHANA DOESN'T BELIEVE IN COMMUNISM THEREFORE IT BE UNWISE TO CELEBRATE SOMEONE WHOSE INTENTION WAS TO RULE US FOREVER.MAYBE IN CUBA OR HANOI.

How wrong you are. African culture is communalism. Our chiefs stay on their stool till death takes them away.
Is Ashanti hene or Ga hene going to have election? when? Please let me know.
On Nkrumah's note. One party state was balloted on democratic principle of referendum. if people didn't like it why did they vote for it.
Chaves of Venezuela is doing the same. Maybe he is wrong for practicing democracy. That is USA anti democratic USA says.

l think nkrumah's birthday should declare as national holiday because if kotoka has been named after our international airport, then l strongly believe the father of our country deserve a double portion of that.

It is hard to believe that some people are really against the idea of observing and honouring a national holiday about Kwame Nkrumah. Every human being has a flaw or perhaps not perfect. We Ghanains should respect what Nkrumah did for us. Maybe we should sit back and expore the importance and significance of our independence and also becoming a republic nation within such a short period of time. I beleive it is worth having such a holiday because of the depth of Nkrumah's legacy in the history of Ghana as it was before and as it is now and for many years to come.
