University of Ghana, Legon The police are investigating death threats issued against some lecturers of the University of Ghana, Legon, by a student group that is protesting against the new accommodation policy in the university.

Image A source at the Legon Police said that some personnel had been deployed to investigate the matter and were collaborating with the university’s security "to institute precautionary measures."

In addition, he said the police are trying to locate the leaders of the group to question them about the threats.

The university lodged a complaint with the Legon Police Station on Wednesday evening, after the authorities received a statement containing the threats from a group calling itself Militant African Youth Against Neo-colonialism (MAYAN).

ACP Kwasi Appiah Boateng, Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, also told the Times yesterday, "We are monitoring the situation closely."

ACP Boateng said the police are not leaving anything to chance and would monitor the situation to ensure that lives and property on the campus are protected.

The statement, signed with blood and tagged "Operation BHABOTOLD," said their targets’ "silence on a sensitive issue such as the proposed in-out-out-out residential policy has only made you an ally to the Vice-Chancellor’s imperialist bull….t."

It said the operation, which will commence 72hours from Wednesday evening, would be in the form of poisoning, acid attacks, maiming and kidnapping of the lecturers and their families.

In spite of the threats, the situation on campus yesterday was peaceful with normal academic work going on. Source: Ghanaian Times
