Teacher, pupil smoke peace pipe
The chiefs and people of Jukwa Watreso in the Central Region have met and resolved an incident which happened at Watreso D/A Primary School, at Jukwa last Friday, in which a Class 3 pupil called his teacher a wee smoker.
At meeting convened at the Watreso School premises, in the presence of the Chief of Jukwa, Nana Antwi, and the Ghana Education Service (GES) Circuit Supervisor, Mr Ofori Mensah Asiedu, on Monday, the Chief appealed to the school authorities to return to the classroom with the assurance that their lives would be safe.
The Chief assured them that the community would deal drastically with anyone who caused unnecessary unrest in the school.
Nana Antwi again appealed to the school authorities, not to go to the press when such incidents happen, but rather report them to the chief for settlement.
The parent of Francis Korang, who was reported to have passed that comment, and Nana Asaahene, former assembly man for the area, apologized to the teacher, Mr Samuel Appiagyei.
They also appealed to the teachers to return to the classroom in order not to disturb the studies of their wards.
Meanwhile, the school has been reopened and classes are going on normally.
On Monday, The Chronicle published that Francis Korang, a Class 3 pupil at Jukwa Watreso D/A Primary School, referred to his teacher as a "wee" smoker, and when flogged his parents, in the company of the former assembly man of the area, almost fought the school for punishing the pupil.

This just kills me. I'm a teacher in the US and I've seen what lack of discipline and respect by students can do. He have schools full of little thugs who know they can do anything because their dumb parents believe what they say. We can't punish them. We can not paddle them (it is illegal), we can't hurt their feelings (it is illegal). These same junior thugs then go out and rape and murder while they are still teenagers. Ghana do not let your schools end up like ours where almost no learning takes place. Sometimes I think I'm a police woman and not a teacher.
