Ghana miss Nations Cup glory

Setback for Ghana as Egypt scores a late winner to clinch the African Nations Cup title in Luanda.

Mohamed Gedo scored in the 85th minute as the holders broke down the Ghana right to lift an unprecedented third successive title, and a record seventh overall, bringing to an end the three-week continental showpiece in Angola which defied all pre-tournament predictions.

Egypt finished the game 1-0 winners.

Late on, Ghana's search for an equaliser failed to materialize as a ball lobbed just did not fall for Eric Addo to connect.

That miss sealed Ghana's day as the Black Stars failed to annex a fifth title.

The entire football world, witnessed the inspirational story to have come out of the competition which has to be the emergence of a youthful, hard working Ghana team and Milovan Rajevac.

But Ghana, with the odds always stuck against them will feel hard done after having the game’s best chances in the second half.

The opening ten minutes saw both sides go in search of goal after which the tempo of the game was considerably slowed.

It was less dramatic in the first half as Koman Coulibaly ended the first half with no cards handed any of the twenty-two players on the field at the November 11 Stadium.

Opoku Agyemang was the only Ghanaian to have picked up a yellow card as Egypt had three players picking up cards.

Ghana defended neatly as they continued with their efficient work ethic throughout but were helpless when Gedo finished off a swift one-two.

The Ghana team will be heartbroken but the new generation of Black Stars appear to have exceeded expectations and the team's rise bodes well for another major competition ahead, the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa.
